spot month margin

spot month margin
One of the adjustments made by the SPAN margining system to the initial margin requirement. This increases the margin requirement for products on certain exchanges as delivery for that product draws near. This occurs in order to ensure that customers contemplating taking the contract to delivery have allocated adequate funds to effect settlement, and also to force any less well capitalised speculators out of the market, and thereby reduce short term speculative pressures.
